Description

In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Royal Albert Hall and the 170th anniversary of the Great Exhibition, Halcyon Days is delighted to introduce this exquisite enamel box. Featuring the magnificent painting ‘The First of May 1851’ by renowned German artist Franz Saver Winterhalter, this piece is a true testament to artistry and history.

The painting captures a serene and symbolic scene; Queen Victoria cradles her son, Prince Arthur, as he presents a posy of lily of the valley to his godfather, Arthur, Duke of Wellington. This flower, a traditional good luck charm on May 1st, marks the arrival of spring. In the exchange, the Duke bestows his godson with a bejewelled casket. The date is especially significant, as it commemorates the birthdays of both Prince Arthur and the Duke of Wellington, as well as the opening day of the Great Exhibition.

This piece is limited to an edition of 50.
